Welcome

…to the second edition of The Bugle, the new journal of the Fort Halstead Heritage Centre. It is intended to promote historical activities at The Fort and in particular, interesting artefacts in the Collection.

One of the most rewarding aspects of publicising Fort Halstead’s work is meeting up with former members of staff and hearing their stories. In this edition, we publish the first of what we hope will be a series of reminiscences, with a substantial essay by Bob Ruffles.

We have two additional articles, one on the Fort’s first computer known as AMOS (shown below from 1954) and one on a visit last year by the families of the owners of the site from the years when it was in private hands. There is also a follow-up on last week’s article about the Duke of Edinburgh’s visit in 1964 and news of the forthcoming exit from Langhurst.

This year of course is the 75th anniversary of VE Day and VJ Day. A later edition of the Bugle will describe Fort Halstead’s role during the Second World War and we would be very interested to hear from anyone who served at The Fort during that period or may have information within the family. The last page of the Bugle has contact details and this message will also be placed in the local press.
